At present, the Indian Railways follows a two-stage review process to ensure financial discipline and accurate allocation of funds:

- Details (English): This is a dual-purpose review. It involves preparing the Revised Estimates (RE) for the ongoing financial year based on actual expenditure and earnings so far. Simultaneously, it sets the Budget Estimates (BE) for the upcoming financial year.
- विवरण (Hindi): यह समीक्षा सितंबर में की जाती है। इसमें चालू वित्तीय वर्ष के लिए अब तक के वास्तविक खर्च और कमाई के आधार पर संशोधित अनुमान (RE) तैयार किए जाते हैं। साथ ही, अगले वित्तीय वर्ष के लिए बजट अनुमान (BE) भी निर्धारित किए जाते हैं।

- Details (English): As the financial year nears its conclusion, the Final Modification Estimates (FME) are prepared. This is the last opportunity to reappropriate funds, surrender unspent amounts, or request additional grants to ensure the books are balanced before the year ends in March.
